How to Manage Nutrition in Hemodialysis Patients

How to Manage Nutrition in Hemodialysis Patients

Hello Hermina Friends, hemodialysis patients often ask what is proper nutrition for hemodialysis patients? And why should we know? Because the nutritional diet in patients with kidney failure is a method that regulates the intake of food and drinks that enter the body and must be according to needs.

What is Hemodialysis?

Hemodialysis is dialysis therapy outside the body. This therapy is generally performed by people with kidney problems whose kidneys are not functioning optimally. Basically, the human body is able to wash the blood automatically, but if there is a problem with the kidneys, the kidneys will lose their function. Kidney is an organ that has a vital role in the body.

This organ is responsible for filtering blood. In addition to cleaning the blood in the body, the kidneys also form substances that keep the body healthy. However, in people with chronic kidney disease or kidney failure, this organ cannot function properly.

This condition causes the body to need dialysis using medical devices. In other words, in this condition, this treatment replaces the role of the kidneys when these organs are no longer able to work effectively.

The purpose of managing nutrition in hemodialysis patients:

1. Avoid excessive catabolism

2. Achieve optimal nutritional status

3. Synthesize damaged tissue

So, Friend of Hermina Bitung, food ingredients and anything consumed must be appropriate and not arbitrary.

Recommended and Restricted Food Ingredients and Processing Methods:

Nutritional arrangements for hemodialysis patients need to pay attention to what foodstuffs need to be limited and related to safe processing methods for patients.

Some of the recommended foodstuffs are:

1. Source of Carbohydrates: rice, vermicelli, noodles and sugar.

2. Sources of Animal Protein: eggs, milk, meat, fish, chicken.

3.  tofu, soy milk, can be used as a substitute for animal protein for patients who like a variety of menus or for vegetarian patients as long as protein needs are still taken into account.

4. Source of Fat: coconut oil, corn oil, soybean oil, low-salt margarine, butter.

5. Source of vitamins and minerals

6. All vegetables and fruit, unless the patient has hyperkalemia, needs to avoid fruits and vegetables high in potassium and needs special management, namely by soaking vegetables and fruit in warm water for 2 hours, after that the soaking water is discarded, the vegetables/fruits are washed again with water flowing and for fruit can be cooked into fruit stup/fruit cocktail.

Food ingredients that are restricted for hemodialysis patients:

1. Avoid vegetables and fruits high in potassium if the patient has hyperkalemia. Foods high in potassium include spinach, gambas, cassava leaves, lychees, papaya leaves, young coconut, bananas, durian and jackfruit.

2. Avoid/limit foods high in sodium if the patient is hypertensive, edema and ascites. Food ingredients high in sodium include salt, MSG, dry broth/flavors, preserved, canned and salted foods.

So a friend of Hermina Bitung, if anyone wants to consult regarding nutrition in hemodialysis patients, they can consult a nutrition specialist and clinic dr. Patricia Fergie Claudia Halim Puteri, SpGK
