Early Detection of Breast Cancer, the Key to Increasing Chances of Recovery
Lumps that appear in the breast often raise concerns about whether the lump is a tumour or even breast cancer, which is malignant and dangerous. All abnormal lumps are tumours, and if they are malignant, they are called cancer, which can be confirmed through pathological examination.
The most important thing in diagnosing breast cancer is the ability to recognise and notice changes in the breast, such as lumps, changes in skin colour, or discharge from the nipple. If there are abnormal changes in the breasts, this needs to be alerted and immediately checked by competent medical personnel. Although these changes are not necessarily malignant, early detection is very important to ensure whether the treatment will be effective.
Early detection with BSE and SADANIS
BSE (Breast Self-Examination) is an important first step to detect changes in the breasts. BSE is done by feeling the entire breast area using three fingers and pressing gently. It is best to do BSE on the 7th to 10th day after menstruation. For example, if a woman menstruates on the 1st, then BSE can be done between the 7th and 10th. For women who are no longer menstruating, breast self-examination can be done regularly every month, for example on the 1st of each month. By regularly carrying out this examination, it will be easier for us to recognise changes that occur in the breasts. If changes are found, immediately carry out further examination with SADANIS (Clinical Breast Examination) at the nearest health facility.
How important is early detection of breast cancer?
Early detection is a very important main step in treating breast cancer. Until now, there is no medicine to prevent cancer, but what we can do is detect tumors or cancer at the earliest or early stages. The way to do this is through early detection by doing BSE and SADANIS. The sooner cancer is found, the better the chances of treatment.
Cancer is closely related to survival rates. One of the indicators used is the five-year survival rate. The earlier the cancer is detected, the higher the five-year survival rate; it can even reach 100%. Conversely, the higher the stage of cancer found, the lower the five-year survival rate.
