Ganglion Cysts, Know the Causes and Treatment

Ganglion cysts are lumps filled with fluid that grow in the joint area or tissue that connects muscles to bones (tendons). Ganglion cysts are round or oval in shape and generally measure less than 2.5 cm. However, the size of the cyst can increase as activity increases in the joint. Apart from occurring on the hands or wrists, these cysts also commonly appear on the feet or ankles. As a result, the function of the hands or feet can be disrupted.

Causes of Ganglion Cysts

Ganglion cysts occur when joint fluid builds up and forms a pocket in a joint or tendon. Lumps filled with fluid generally have a soft texture when pressed. The cause of ganglion cyst formation is still not known for certain, but there are several conditions that are thought to increase the risk of ganglion cysts, including osteoarthritis or joint injury. There are several factors that can increase the risk of forming ganglion cysts, namely:

    Female gender

    20-40 years old

    Injuries to joints or tendons

    Suffering from osteoarthritis

Ganglion Cyst Symptoms

Common symptoms of ganglion cysts include:

One or more lumps appear on the hands

The lump has a soft texture and can be moved when pressed

Pain in the joints and will become worse when moved

Tingling and numbness in the area of the lump

Swelling around the joints or tendons that can appear suddenly
Ganglion cyst diagnosis

In the case of a ganglion cyst diagnosis, the patient will consult a doctor regarding the symptoms and history of the patient's complaints. After that, the doctor will conduct a thorough physical examination of the patient. The supporting examinations that can be carried out to confirm the diagnosis include:

Ultrasonography (USG) to check whether the lump that appears contains fluid or deep tissue

Needle Biopsy, to detect cysts by taking a fluid sample from the cyst which will then be examined further in the laboratory

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), to check whether the lump is a cyst or another type of disease such as arthritis or a certain tumor.

Ganglion Cyst Treatment

Most cases of ganglion cysts do not cause symptoms and can heal on their own without treatment. However, if this ganglion cyst causes severe symptoms and interferes with daily activities, the medical team and doctors can use several methods as follows:

    Aspiration

Aspiration is a medical procedure that is carried out by sucking or removing fluid from the cyst using a needle. However, this action cannot remove the cyst permanently.

    Operation action

If aspiration has been carried out and there are no significant changes, the doctor may consider performing surgery (surgery). By carrying out a surgical procedure, the doctor can remove cysts that are attached to joints or tendons. This surgical procedure is considered effective in preventing the return of ganglion cysts
