Get to know what a stroke is

Stroke is a focal and global neurological deficit that occurs suddenly, lasts for 24 hours or more, and can cause death without any other obvious cause other than vascular. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain becomes blocked or ruptures. As a result, part of the brain does not get the blood supply that carries the necessary oxygen, so it experiences cell and tissue death.

Based on the condition, stroke is divided into two types: first, ischemic stroke (blockage stroke); the most common strokes are embolic strokes (blood clots or plaques that form in the heart or large arteries that are transported to the brain) and thrombotic strokes (clots of blood or plaque that form in the arteries that supply blood to the brain). Second, hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding stroke) blood vessels adjacent to the surface of the brain and blood leaking between the brain and skull bones. The cause can vary, but is usually due to the rupture of an aneurysm (a condition where there is dilation of blood vessels in the brain due to weakening of the blood vessel wall at a certain point).

Signs and symptoms of a stroke, such as:

  • asymmetrical smile (turned to one side), choking, sudden difficulty swallowing water;
  • the movement of half of the limbs suddenly weakens.
  • Speech is slurred, suddenly unable to speak, can't understand words, or doesn't connect
  • Numbness, numbness, or tingling in half of the body;
  • Myopic, blurred vision in one eye, occurs suddenly.
  • Severe headaches that appear suddenly and have never been felt before; balance function disorders, such as spinning; movement that is difficult to coordinate.

Prevention that can be done, namely:

  • Blood pressure control
  • Do moderate exercise five times a week for at least 30 minutes
  • Eat a balanced and healthy diet (more fruits and vegetables, less salt)
  • Control your cholesterol levels
  • Maintain a balanced body weight
  • Quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke
  • Do not consume alcohol
  • Check for and treat heart disease
  • Reduce the risk of diabetes
