Recognizing the Difference between Mental Problems & Mental Disorders

According to the Mental Health Law no.18 of 2014:

A. People with psychiatric problems: people who have physical, mental, social problems, growth & development and/ quality of life so that they are at risk of experiencing mental disorders.

By prevalence: 15-30%

B. People with mental disorders : people who experience disturbances in thoughts, feelings & behavior, which are manifested in a collection of symptoms (syndromes) and/or significant changes in behavior, causing obstacles, and suffering in carrying out human functions.

Prevalence: 1 person/mile or about 1%

* Why is it important to understand?

- Awareness about mental health is very important because health care is part of human health as a whole and affects human daily functioning, social interactions, and productivity.

- The impact that must be borne when a misunderstanding arises about this is very large, (1) labeling, negative stigma and exclusion appear which worsens sse's mental condition; (2) those who receive labeling can be hampered by their potential, low self-esteem, worsening their condition of menmen; (3) inhibits proper handling and increases the risk of maltreatment by non-professionals.

*Stress, Anxiety & Depression

- Stress is a psychological and physiological human response to internal and external demands

-Natural, found everyday

-can have a negative impact (distress), but also have a positive/motivating impact (eustress).

-distress is the one who is at risk of developing into psychological problems (anxiety, depression, confusion, aggression, etc.), and if there is no resolution/not managed properly, it can develop into mental disorders (gg.anxiety, gg.mood, such as depression, psychosis, etc.)

So that between stress, anxiety and depression can be related to one another.

*Early Detection of Mental Problems

- It is not taboo to share the problems we experience or feel with other parties, as long as: the party is professional (guaranteed confidentiality of the problem, based on the professional code of ethics, has active listening and counseling skills, and is objective)

- Indicators of when to consult a child care professional:

(1) feeling uncomfortable in acting or going about your daily life

(2) have tried to find solutions and resolve themselves, but have not been successful

(3) leads to unhealthy/unproductive/addictive escape behavior, such as: addiction to games, gadgets, cooped up in a room, etc.

(4) complaints/concerns from people around us

(5) recently experienced a traumatic event.

 

Early Detection of Mental Disorders:

(A) constant discomfort, unproductivity, confusion

(B) drastic changes in mood continuously

(C) ideas, thoughts or actions appear to harm oneself and/or others

(D) acts that deviate from social norms and customs appear

(E) many other people feel uncomfortable with it

-A-E continuous duration of more than 2 weeks



(F) there is an inconsistency between the thoughts, feelings and actions of the person concerned

(G) there are false beliefs, hallucinations of the five senses

-F and G duration, 6 months appear continuously

*kewa professionals: psychologists and psychiatrists

- Psychiatrists take a medical approach to relieve symptoms of mental disorders

-Psychologists take a counseling and psychotherapeutic approach in helping clients/patients find alternative solutions to their mental problems, helping to restructure the personality and interaction patterns of clients/patients who are considered to be risk factors for psychiatric disorders.

*CLOSING

- mental health is a wide continuum with "gray" boundaries, but with the help of a mental health professional it can be understood and managed.

- self-understanding and management of self-assets (thoughts, emotions and motivation to act/attitude) can improve sse's mental health conditions.

- Mental health problems are not taboo/disgraceful, but human psychological conditions that need good support and management, just like health problems in general.

- mental disorders can be managed and treated so that they recover, the faster they are handled and the support from their social environment is obtained, the better the prediction of recovery.
