Neck Pain Due to Wrong Sleeping Position? Let's do this
Wrong sleeping position can indeed cause pain in the neck, but not only that, neck pain conditions that have appeared before can also affect the quality of your sleep. These conditions can certainly affect your activities and work throughout the day.
There are several causes of neck pain when you wake up:
1) Wrong sleeping position
2) Improper use of pillows
3) Mattresses and pillows that are too soft or too hard can be a factor
4) Wrong posture habit .
5) Prior neck injury.
Do the stretching technique slowly, stopping if the pain gets worse.
- Neck extension : Move your neck slowly towards the ceiling and hold for 5 seconds.
- Neck flexion : Slowly and gently lower the chin towards the chest while looking down. Hold the stretch for 5 seconds before returning your head to a neutral position.
- Lateral neck flexion : Keep your shoulders and back straight and still. Slowly and carefully bend your head to the side, point your left ear to your left shoulder, pushing gently on the right side of your head. Hold the stretch for 5 seconds, before repeating on the opposite side.
- Neck rotation : Keeping your back straight and shoulders still, while slowly and carefully turn your head to the left as far as it will go, pushing gently on your chin with your right hand. Hold for 5 seconds before repeating on the opposite side.
How to prevent neck pain:
1. Maintain an upright posture when doing activities
2. Use a pillow that is comfortable and not too thin or hard
3. Use a supine or side sleeping position and keep the head-neck-body in line
4. Do regular exercise to help strengthen muscles including neck muscles. Exercise can also help improve posture.
