The MPOX virus has entered Indonesia; is it dangerous?

MPOX, previously known as monkeypox, is an infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus, which belongs to the Orthopoxvirus family of viruses. This virus was first identified in 1958 in a laboratory in Copenhagen, Denmark, when two smallpox-like outbreaks occurred in primates that were the object of research. However, the first human cases were reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1970. In recent years, MPOX has spread to various countries outside Africa, including countries in Europe and North America. With the emergence of MPOX cases in Indonesia, it is important to understand the dangers posed by this virus.

Spread and Symptoms

The MPOX virus can be transmitted through direct contact with infected people, animals, or contaminated materials. Transmission can occur through open wounds, contact with body fluids, or through droplets when interacting closely with sufferers. Symptoms of MPOX are similar to those of smallpox, including fever, headache, muscle aches, and a rash that can spread throughout the body. This rash usually starts with flat spots, which then turn into fluid-filled pustules, before eventually drying out and forming scabs.

First Case in Indonesia

In November 2022, the Indonesian Ministry of Health confirmed the first case of MPOX in Indonesia. Since then, the authorities have continued to monitor case developments and provide information to the public regarding prevention and treatment. Although MPOX rarely causes death, this infection can be potentially dangerous, especially for individuals with weakened immune systems, children, and those not vaccinated against smallpox.

Is MPOX Dangerous?

While MPOX can cause unpleasant symptoms and can lead to serious complications in some individuals, the risk of transmitting this virus in Indonesia is still relatively low when compared to other infectious diseases, such as COVID-19. However, awareness and vigilance remain important. The Ministry of Health has appealed to the public to maintain cleanliness and avoid close contact with infected people.

Preventive Steps

Some preventive measures recommended by health authorities include:

  1. Avoid Close Contact: Keep your distance from people who show symptoms of MPOX, and avoid contact with animals that can carry the virus.

  2. Wash Your Hands Regularly: Washing your hands with soap and water or using hand sanitiser can help reduce the risk of infection.

  3. Pay attention to your health: If you experience suspicious symptoms, immediately consult a health professional to get an appropriate examination and treatment.

  4. Public Education: Raising awareness about MPOX and its mode of transmission is important to prevent further spread.

Conclusion

The MPOX virus has entered Indonesia and is causing concern among the public. Although not everyone who is infected will experience serious complications, it is still important to be aware of the disease and follow recommended preventive measures. Health authorities continue to strive to monitor the situation and provide the latest information to the public to keep them safe and protected.
