Let's recognize the signs of bullying in children
Bullying cases continue to occur. Students bullying other students has gone viral on social media over the last few months, including junior high school students in Cilacap, Central Java, who hit, dragged and stepped on other students.
The Indonesian Child Protection Commission, Monday (9/10/2023), said that until August 2023 it had received 2,355 cases of child protection violations. Of that number, there were 87 cases of bullying, 27 cases related to the provision of educational facilities, and 24 cases of victims of educational policies.
Whatever the reason, bullying should be avoided, especially in the school environment which is a place to instill positive values for the nation's next generation.
The negative impact of bullying on children and how the effects can continue into adulthood. Bullying is not just a small problem that can be ignored. This is a serious problem that affects children's well-being and their development. Therefore, it is important for parents, teachers and all individuals involved in children's lives to understand this issue well.
What is bullying/bullying?
Bullying is intentional and harmful aggressive behavior carried out by one or more individuals against another individual. Bullying can be physical, verbal or relational. Bullying can occur in various places, including at school, in social environments, or even in cyberspace. And done repeatedly.
Types of Bullying:
1. Physical Bullying: This involves aggressive physical acts such as punching, kicking, or other physical abuse.
2. Verbal Bullying: Verbal bullying involves harsh words, insults, or threats. This can happen in person or via text messages and social media.
3. Relational Bullying: This type of bullying involves attempts to damage a child's social relationships and friendships. This includes gossip, cutting friends off from groups, or isolating children from their friends.
Signs of Bullying in Children:
It is important to recognize the signs of bullying in children so that we can take immediate action. Some signs to look for include:
- Changes in behavior: Children who are victims of bullying may experience changes in their behavior. They may become more withdrawn, anxious, or depressed.
- Unexplained physical problems: Children who are frequent victims of bullying may have unexplained bruises or wounds.
- Loss of personal items: The child's personal items, such as books or clothes, may be lost or damaged for no apparent reason.
- Avoidance of school or social activities: Children who are victims of bullying may try to avoid situations associated with the bully.
