Find Out What Is Electroencephalography (EEG)

What is EEG or Brain Record?

Electro Encephalograph (EEG) is a tool that studies images from recordings of electrical activity in the brain, including EEG recording techniques and their interpretation. Neurons in the cerebral cortex emit electrical waves with very small voltages (mV), which are then sent to the EEG machine to be amplified so that an electroenselogram is recorded which is large enough to be captured by the EEG reader's eye as delta, alpha, beta, theta waves. , gamma etc.

What is the Purpose of the EEG?

Medical circles use EEG signals to diagnose diseases associated with brain and psychiatric disorders. Although the use of modern techniques such as CT Scan and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) can examine the brain, EEG is still useful because it is non-destructive, can be used online and is very cheap compared to the two methods.
Besides other advantages, EEG signals can identify mental states and thoughts, and capture a person's perception of stimuli
How is the EEG prepared?
• The day before the EEG is not allowed to take medication except for patients who are already accustomed to taking medication such as seizure patients and diabetic patients.

• On the night before the recording on the EEG, adult patients were only allowed to sleep 5 hours, and pediatric patients aged 1-12 years were only allowed to sleep 6 hours.

•Eating breakfast before the EEG is only allowed to eat a little, and drink only water.

•A few hours before the EEG, wash the hair thoroughly with shampoo, do not give hair oil, spray, lotion, etc.
What are the Indications and Uses of EEG?

  • Patients who have had a seizure or who are suspected of having a seizure.
  • Evaluate the cerebral effects of various systemic diseases (eg metabolic encephalopathy due to diabetes, renal failure
  • Do a stud to find out interference.
  • sleep disorder (sleep disorder) or narcolepsy.
  • Help establish the diagnosis of coma.
  • Localize changes in the brain's electrical potential
  • Caused by trauma, tumors, vascular disorders
  • direction (vascular) and degenerative diseases.
  • Help look for various cerebral disorders that can cause headaches, behavioral disturbances and intellectual decline.
How is the EEG Process?

  • After the patient has prepared the EEG
  • The patient's head will be attached with electrodes that are connected to a computer system.
  • In that condition, the patient must be cooperative, not move much and follow the operator's orders.
  • Recording is done for approximately 10 minutes, depending on the patient's condition.
  • Patients do not need to be accompanied by their families except for toddlers and patients with impaired consciousness.
  • After the recording is complete, the patient is advised to wash his hair with warm water
An EEG examination is usually done when a doctor suspects a brain disorder, or when a person experiences symptoms of a disease related to a brain disorder. If Hermina's friend needs an EEG examination, it can be done at Hermina Pasteur Hospital by consulting a neurologist / pediatric neurologist
