Early detection of baby's hearing with the OAE test

Health screening is an important examination procedure carried out by people of all ages, including babies. One important health screening for babies is by carrying out a hearing examination with an OAE test.

 WHAT IS OAE?

Otoaccoustic Emission (OAE) is a hearing screening to assess the sensitivity of the hair cells found in the cochlea. The goal is to determine the status of the cochlea, especially the function of its hair cells. This examination is carried out by inserting a probe into the ear canal to deliver a sound stimulus. This examination does not cause pain.

4 TYPES OF OAE EXAMINATIONS

1. Transient Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs)

In this examination, the sounds emitted are a response to acoustic stimuli, and are presented for a relatively short duration.

2. Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emission (DPOAEs)
In this examination, sound is emitted in response to 2 tones that are heard sequentially with different frequencies
3. pontaneous otoacoustic emissions (OAEs)
Sound stimuli emitted by OAE without acoustic stimulus, but spontaneously
4. Transient otoacoustic (SF OAEs)
The sound emitted by the OAE transmitter is a response to a continuous tone

WHEN DOES IT NEED A BABY HEARING TEST?

  1. Don't be surprised when you hear noisy and loud sounds.
  2. Not responding or turning towards the source of the sound, especially if the baby is under 4 months old.
  3. Slow when learning to speak.
  4. Can't say a single word even though he is 1 year old

CONDITIONS THAT ARE AT RISK OF CAUSING HEARING IMPAIRMENT IN BABIES

  1. Genetic Factors
  2. The baby is infected with certain viruses, such as rubella, syphilis, or cytomegalovirus (CMV)
  3. Suffering from meningitis, mumps, or measles.
  4. Suffering from ear infections, such as otitis media.
  5. The mother took certain medications that were not recommended by the doctor during the pregnancy period.
  6. Experiencing complications during labor, such as being born prematurely, or lack of oxygen.
  7. Having low birth weight (LBW).
  8. Having a jaundiced baby (neonatal jaundice).
  9. There is a tumor around the ear.
  10. Accumulation of dirt or fluid in the ear.
Detecting hearing loss as early as possible can prevent problems with a child's language skills in the future. By carrying out hearing screening, doctors can provide early intervention if hearing abnormalities or problems are found.
Hermina's friends can test your little one's hearing ability with OAE at Hermina Wonogiri Hospital. Apart from that, Hermina friends can also consult directly with an ENT specialist at Hermina Wonogiri Hospital
