First Aid for Work Accidents

First Aid for Accidents (P3K) is temporary assistance and treatment provided to victims of workplace accidents using simple equipment before the victim receives complete assistance with the aim of preventing the severity of injury, reducing suffering, and even saving the victim's life. The trend of work accidents often occurs among unskilled workers (less than 3 years); as many as 24% have less than 1 year's experience, so they need to be careful, and as many as 42% have less than 3 years' experience. Fall accidents occupy 25% due to slipping, tripping, and so on; back pain due to forceful movements such as lifting heavy objects reaches 14%; falls due to lifting objects using stairs reach 12%.

Management when work accidents occur

  1. First of all, calm down!
  • Try to stay calm and take appropriate and quick action.
  1. Keep the victim from the next accident.
  • To avoid subsequent accidents that might occur.
  • Apart from that, by avoiding the location of the accident, first aid officers will be able to focus more on caring for the victim.
  1. Pay attention to the victim's level of consciousness.
  • Check the victim's consciousness: whether he is fully conscious, semi-conscious, or unconscious.
  • Method: patting the victim's shoulder while calling the victim or stimulating the victim's sense of smell by placing perfume in the victim's nostrils.
  1. Pay attention to your pulse, breathing, bleeding, and signs of shock.
  • If the victim experiences disturbances in blood circulation or breathing and there are signs of shock, immediately provide first aid according to the Basic Life Support SOP.
  1. Do not move the victim in a hurry.
  • Do not move the victim before it is known for certain the type and severity of the injury suffered, unless the location no longer allows treatment.
  • If the victim is to be lifted or carried, make sure the bleeding has stopped and the broken bones have been splinted.
  1. Evaluation and Treatment of Wounds and Injuries to Victims
  • Check the victim for wounds and injuries.
  • Initial treatment of minor wounds, namely cleaning with an antiseptic and covering with a sterile bandage, can prevent infection and further complications.
  • Initial treatment of serious injuries (ex. broken bones, severe burns) followed by immediate contact with medical assistance.
