Why use an IUD? Will it hurt during intercourse?

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are becoming increasingly popular due to their high effectiveness and long duration of use. IUDs work by preventing fertilization or preventing implantation of a fertilized egg. There are two types of IUDs that are commonly available: Hormonal IUDs and non-hormonal (copper) IUDs. This article will discuss the reasons why IUDs are the choice of many people, as well as answer common questions about pain during intercourse.

Advantages of Using an IUD
High Effectiveness: IUDs have a very high effectiveness rate, reaching over 99% in preventing pregnancy. This makes the IUD one of the most effective contraceptive methods in the world.

Long Term Use: Hormonal IUDs can last up to 3-5 years, while copper IUDs can last up to 10 years. Users do not need to replace the IUD regularly, making it suitable for those who want to plan to delay pregnancy in the long term.

Practical and No Daily Reminders Required: IUDs are inserted by a medical professional once and then work without the need for daily reminders, unlike birth control pills that require consistent use.

Reduced Risk of Uterine Cancer: Some studies show that hormonal IUDs can help reduce the risk of uterine cancer. This is because hormonal IUDs reduce the amount of estrogen in the uterus, which is believed to inhibit the development of cancer cells.

Lighter or Reduced Menstruation: In hormonal IUD users, periods often become lighter or even stop altogether, which can be a solution for those who experience heavy periods.

Will the IUD cause pain during intercourse?
This question comes up often, and in general, IUDs do not cause pain during intercourse. After insertion, the IUD sits in the uterus and does not interfere with sexual activity. However, in some cases, improperly positioned IUDs or IUD threads that are too long can cause discomfort or pain for both the user and her partner. If the user feels discomfort or pain during intercourse, it is important to consult a medical professional immediately.

Also, pain after insertion is usually temporary and will go away once the body adapts. Some people may feel mild cramping for a few days after insertion, but this can generally be managed with pain medication. If the pain persists or is intense, consult a doctor to ensure the IUD is in the correct position.
