Various Occurrence of Cataract Symptoms

The lens of the eye is a structure that functions to focus light entering the eye. Clear lenses are needed for the vision process. A change in the protein structure of the lens causes cloudiness in the lens, which is called a cataract.

In lens cloudiness, complaints will arise: blurry vision (vision like being blocked by smoke/fog), glare, decreased ability to distinguish colors & contrast.

The main cause of cataracts is the aging process.

In addition, factors that can cause cataracts include:
- diabetes mellitus. In conditions of high blood sugar, there will be an increase in sorbitol in the lens, which will accelerate lens degeneration.
- history of eye injury/trauma
- use of corticosteroid drugs
- inflammation of the inside of the eyeball (uveitis).

Smoking and exposure to the sun's ultraviolet are also risk factors for cataracts.

Things we can do to slow down the occurrence of cataracts, including:
Protect your eyes from excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation by using glasses that have ultraviolet filters, hats or umbrellas.
- Do not smoke
- blood sugar control
- Providing antioxidants (vit C & vit E) in several studies can reduce the incidence of cataracts.
- avoid eye injury/trauma by wearing protective goggles while working.

In cataracts with mild lens opacities, giving glasses can help vision. Meanwhile, in more severe conditions, cataract surgery is performed to improve vision.

Now for friends of Hermina Serpong, if you experience some of the symptoms of cataracts, such as blurred vision, sensitivity to light, or vision that looks like you see smoke, immediately consult an ophthalmologist.
