What is Obesity ?
Obesity is a serious medical condition experienced worldwide. Fat accumulation will occur when there is an imbalance between incoming energy (through food and drinks consumed daily) and energy expended. Obesity is a concern for many parties because it causes quite a lot of adverse effects, for example metabolic disorders characterized by increased blood sugar, lipid profiles (cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL). Obesity also directly triggers the exacerbation of other diseases such as worsening asthma, osteoarthritis, low back pain, kidney, heart and nervous system disease, affects the hormonal condition of the body to cause sudden death (obstructive sleep apnea). On the other hand, obesity can indirectly cause cognitive impairment, infertility, mental disorders and cause cancer.

What are the factors that cause obesity ?
There are several factors that cause obesity, such as:
  • genetic factor
  • Socioeconomic factors
  • There are certain diseases
  • Psychological disorder
  • Use of drugs and hormones
  • Lifestyle shift
Changes in eating patterns and habits that tend towards a sedentary lifestyle (the habit of lying down or not moving much) causes the prevalence of obesity to increase. The types of food currently circulating tend to be calorie-dense rather than nutrient-dense, for example fast food and high-calorie contemporary drinks. This results in a sharp increase in incoming energy intake beyond the body's needs.

How do you know someone is obese?
There are several ways to determine whether a person is obese or not. According to WHO, overweight criteria can be assessed by dividing body weight (in kg) by a person's height (in m2), which is known as body mass index (BMI). The ideal body weight is enforced when BMI is in the range of 18.5 - 22.9 kg/m2. However, the cut off point in the classification of obesity in Asia Pacific has different criteria from WHO in general. Based on WHO Asia Pacific, what is called obesity is when a BMI value is > 25 kg/m2. Based on BMI values, obesity in the Asia Pacific population can be divided into two categories:
Class 1 obesity: BMI 25 - < 29.9 kg/m2
Class 2 obesity: BMI ³30 kg/m2
In addition, obesity can also be categorized based on the distribution of fat in the body, namely central obesity and obesity in general. This can be supported by an assessment of waist circumference. For the Asia Pacific population, men are recommended to have a waist circumference of no more than 90 cm, while women are no more than 80 cm. In some conditions, for example individuals who work as weight lifters, will have high BMI values but normal body fat composition and large body muscle composition. Thus, one thing to remember is that BMI can indeed help us determine the ideal body weight, but BMI alone cannot be a measure of whether a person is healthy or not. Consult your health condition, especially if you have risk factors for certain diseases and live an unhealthy lifestyle.
